The town of Swellendam is known as a horse rider’s paradise. Other outdoor activities include cycling, 4 wheel drive tours, gliding and micro-lighting. In season, whale watching can be experienced from the air flying from the local airstrip, or viewed from various vantage points along the coast. Swellendam is the gateway to the Little Karoo via the spectacular Tradouw Pass. Visit Barrydale and Montagu, characteristic country towns with hot mineral springs. The Breede River valley is home to some of South Africa's finest wineries.
The Drostdy Museum reflects the official history of the district, from a Dutch East India Company outpost, to a prosperous town. Bontebok National Park is home to the cape mountain zebra, 126 bird species, exquisite flora and naturally the Bontebok antelope. Marloth Nature Reserve is a botanist's dream with an abundance of flowers and fynbos vegetation. Also close by is De Hoop Nature Reserve, a unique reserve with 7 distinct ecosystems. The De Hoop vlei is a sanctuary for waterfowl and other birds. It is an excellent spot to view southern right whales from July to December.
Travel information
Swellendam is situated just off the N2, 240 km from Cape Town or 160 km from Mossel Bay. The main entrances to the town lead into Swellendam's main street: Voortrek Street.
From Cape Town:
- Take the West entrance into Swellendam
- Drive 3.2 km along the main street.
- Just after the famous NG white church the main street splits; take the left fork for 30 metres.
- Turn left into Human Street.
- Well signposted with the image of Augusta de Mist, the building is just visible through the trees.
- Following the signs brings you into the garden where parking is secure, shaded and close to your accommodation.
From George:
- Take the East entrance into Swellendam via the main street.
- Approximately 500 metres from where the buildings start, you will pass on your left La Belle Aliance tea garden.
- After the small bridge turn right, left and right again into Human Street, all are within approximately 30 metres of each other.
